Prototyping Guide

Over time, you will develop a prototyping skillset specific to your work.

Check out the Techniques section for more resources.

Here is a guide for those starting out in our workshop:

Low-Fidelity Prototyping

Test and communicate initial ideas quickly and inexpensively, with low-fidelity models.

Techniques

Start Small

Build your model to a scale that is practical to work with and transport. The smaller your model, the less material and machine time required to produce it.

Techniques

Functional Prototyping

Test joints, mechanisms, electronics, model-making processes, etc in isolation.

Techniques

Refining Form for Aesthetics and Ergonomics

Moving on from 2D drawings, 3D forms and surfaces can be defined through 3D models - digital or physical. Use a medium that works for you and the project. Physical models are essential to test ergonomics.

Techniques

  • foam or clay sculpting

  • 3D CAD

  • additive or subtractive CNC

High-Fidelity Modelling

As a design progresses in detail and refinement, you may produce a complete model at full scale in realistic materials.
